Right Groups condemn Senegal’s Prohibition of opposition protests

Senegalese Human Rights League ( LSDH ) , Amnesty International / Senegal , ARTICLE 19 / West Africa , the African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO ) and the International Society for Human Rights / Senegal (ISHR / Senegal) are concerned about the recurrence of administrative decisions banning demonstrations of the opposition.
A press statement issued today in Dakar by five rights group reads:”

We condemn the arrests of opposition leaders made ​​during the demonstration on 30 January 2015 and the excessive use of force by the police on peaceful demonstrators.

The exercise by citizens of one of the pillars of democracy, namely the right to peaceful protest as a legitimate means to express themselves and to claim other civil liberties guaranteed by the Constitution of Senegal and international treaties and regional which Senegal is a party.

Our organizations and would recall that the imperative incumbent on the Administration to preserve public order and security must necessarily be reconciled with the inalienable right of citizens and organized groups on the exercise of fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution .

Our organizations therefore require stopping unfounded bans and the immediate and unconditional release of all persons arrested simply because of the exercise of the freedoms enshrined and guaranteed by the Constitution and call the Senegalese authorities to comply with their obligations promotion and protection of civil liberties in Senegal.
